LPB

We’re still tallying up the pledges from our membership campaign but we want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported us by joining or renewing their membership in Friends of LPB! We will have the final totals next week.

We’re back to regular programming this week. Tonight, Antiques Roadshow visits Milwaukee followed by two new episodes of History Detectives.

Tuesday night, we have encore showings of the 2010 Louisiana Legends Gala at 8PM and the 2010 Louisiana Young Heroes at 9.

Wednesday at 7PM, Live from Lincoln Center has a new production of the Broadway classic South Pacific.

Thursday at 8PM, Sherlock Holmes tries to determine why a dejected wife was murdered. At 9, it’s the premiere of our new British series Doc Martin. He is a big city surgeon who takes a job in a small town. His bedside manner is so non-existent he makes House look warm and fuzzy. MI-5 moves to 10PM.

Friday night at 9:30, LPB will air its award-winning documentary Frame After Frame: The Images of Herman Leonard, a documentary about the famed Jazz photographer. Leonard passed away over the weekend at the age of 87.

On Sunday at 5PM, we rebroadcast American Creole: New Orleans Reunion, the story of New Orleans musician Don Vappie’s struggles after Katrina.

THANKS, RALNA!

LPB Special thanks to longtime Lawrence Welk star Ralna English for coming to Baton Rouge to be on the air Saturday night. We had a great time at the meet and greet before the show.

LPB LPB, La Fondation Louisiane, the Marquis de Lafayette 250th Anniversary Committee and Lafayette Consolidated Government will host a special preview of the new documentary Lafayette: The Lost Hero on Wednesday, September 8 at the LITE (Louisiana Immersive Technologies Enterprise) Center located at 537 Cajundome Blvd in Lafayette.

Seating will begin at 6:30PM with the screening at 7. A champagne reception will followed the screening. Café Vermilionville is providing the food and beverages for the event with Mello Joy providing the coffee.

The event is a fundraiser for Friends of LPB with part of the proceeds going to send an Acadiana area student to study in France through the auspices of La Fondation Louisiane. The cost is a donation of $50 per person. To RSVP or get more information, call 1-800-272-8161, ext. 4289 or (225) 767-4289.

The documentary, which airs Monday, September 13 at 9PM, chronicles the life of Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, the Marquis of Lafayette. A major figure in both the American and French Revolutions, Lafayette was one of the most famous figures of his time. The program examines why a wealthy young aristocrat would voluntarily join the war to help a fledgling nation earn its independence. Much of the material from the documentary came from the letters and memoirs of his wife, Adrienne de Noailles, and General George Washington.

WASHING AWAY: AFTER THE STORMS TO PREMIERE AUGUST 25 ON LPB & PBS

LPB Five years after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Louisiana’s recovery is eclipsed by the largest environmental disaster in American history. In this new half-hour documentary, LPB follows six very different survivors as they fight to keep their land, livelihoods and way of life from washing away. Their journey through setbacks, subsequent storms and new threats illustrates a microcosm of the larger challenges that Louisiana and the nation face as natural and man-made disasters continue to assault America’s Gulf Coast. It premieres Wednesday, August 25 at 8PM with an encore showing on Sunday, August 29 at 9:30PM on LPB and airs nationally on PBS stations around the country on those same two nights.

The program features Kerry St. Pé, a marine biologist and the Director of the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program, a 4.2 million acre area currently experiencing the world’s fastest rate of land loss; Leah Chase, chef and co-owner of the famous Dooky Chase Restaurant in New Orleans; Errol Domingue, a third-generation sugar cane, rice, cattle and crawfish farmer from Erath, and musician Marlon Horton, a New Orleans East resident rescued from Katrina’s floodwaters and evacuated to the Astrodome in Houston. Also featured are former Port Fourchon Director Ted Falgout, the Liaison for Ports and Parish Governments at BP’s Primary Incident Command Center, and Preston Doré, a shrimper from Delcambre who lost his home and business in Rita and now faces an even greater challenge as the oil spill threatens to take away his lifeline.

Narrated by two time Emmy-Award winner, Academy-Award nominee and New Orleans native Patricia Clarkson, Washing Away: After the Storms also features the music of Emmy-Award winning composer Mike Esneault. This program is a follow-up to LPB’s award-winning documentary Washing Away: Losing Louisiana which aired nationally on PBS in 2006.

The documentary was produced, written and directed by LPB’s Liz Barnes. It was shot by Rex Q. Fortenberry and John Darling Haynes and edited by Fortenberry and Todd Justice. The Senior Producer & Writer for the project was Christina Melton with Clay Fourrier serving as Executive Producer. Jason Viso is LPB’s Director of Programming.

Funding was provided by the Foundation for Excellence in Louisiana Public Broadcasting.
