Thanks to the generosity of members like you we received 1,920 pledges for $275,237 during our Summerfest membership campaign. Some of the more popular shows during the campaign were Fats Domino - Walkin’ Back to New Orleans, Magic Moments: The Best of 50s Pop and Ed Sullivan’s Rock ‘n Roll Classics. The drive also featured special appearances by Italian Chef Lidia Bastianich, members of the singing group 4Troops and longtime Lawrence Welk star Ralna English.

This week is the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina devastating the Gulf Coast and flooding New Orleans and we have some special programming to remember the storm. On Wednesday at 8, we will premiere Washing Away: After the Storms which profiles six survivors of Katrina and Hurricane Rita and how the storms changed their lives. At 7OM on Wednesday, Louisiana Public Square features a very special town meeting from Buras about the long term effects on the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill on our state. Panelists included Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser, State Wildlife and Fisheries Secretary Robert Barham, BP Incident Commander for Louisiana Keith Seilhan, Dr. Ed Overton, professor at the LSU School of the Coast and Environment. The discussion was moderated by LPB President/CEO Beth Courtney, Louisiana: The State We’re In anchor/producer Shauna Sanford and Tom Bearden from the PBS NewsHour. It also airs Sunday at 5PM. At 9PM, Frontlinepremieres Law & Disorder a look at some of the misconduct by the New Orleans Police Department after Katrina.

On Sunday, we have encore showings of Katrina-related documentaries American Creole: New Orleans Reunion (1PM), Tavis Smiley Reports (3PM), Surviving the Storm (4PM), Fats Domino: Walkin’ Back to New Orleans (6PM) and Washing Away at 9:30. At 10, see the premiere of New Orleans: Getting Back to Normal.
Also premiering this week is our newly revived Louisiana Legends series on Tuesday. LPB President Beth Courtney interviews Basketball Hall of Famer Willis Reed at 8 and arts advocate Marjorie Morrison at 8:30.

GET YOUR TICKET THE PREMIERE OF LAFAYETTE; THE LOST HERO IN LAFAYETTE ON SEPTEMBER 8

LPB LPB, La Fondation Louisiane, the Marquis de Lafayette 250th Anniversary Committee and Lafayette Consolidated Government will host a special preview of the new documentary Lafayette: The Lost Hero on Wednesday, September 8 at the LITE (Louisiana Immersive Technologies Enterprise) Center located at 537 Cajundome Blvd in Lafayette.

Seating will begin at 6:30PM with the screening at 7. A champagne reception will follow the screening. Café Vermilionville is providing the food and beverages for the event with Mello Joy providing the coffee.

The event is a fundraiser for Friends of LPB with part of the proceeds going to send an Acadiana area student to study in France through the auspices of La Fondation Louisiane. The documentary, which airs Monday, September 13 at 9PM, chronicles the life of Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, the Marquis of Lafayette. A major figure in both the American and French Revolutions, Lafayette was one of the most famous figures of his time. The program examines why a wealthy young aristocrat would voluntarily join the war to help a fledgling nation earn its independence. Much of the material from the documentary came from the letters and memoirs of his wife, Adrienne de Noailles, and General George Washington.

FRIENDS OF LPB ANNUAL MEETING SET FOR TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14

LPB If you are a member of Friends of LPB, you are invited to the Friends annual meeting on Tuesday, September 14 at 6:30 at the LPB Telecommunications Center at 7733 Perkins Road in Baton Rouge. The reception starts at 6:30PM and the meeting starts at 7PM. There will be a special preview of PBS and LPB programs coming up this year. Food will be provided by White Oak Plantation.

ART AUCTION MOVING TO OCTOBER

LPB Friends of LPB has moved the Art & Travel Auction to the fall! You will have a chance to get that very special Christmas gift for the art lovers in your family on October 24 during our live airing of the Art & Travel Auction.

Artists who would like to contribute can go to www.lpb.org/auction to fill out the online form to enter. We would love to show off your creation!

We will kick off the auction with LPB’s Art Rocks on October 1from 6 to 8PM at the Louisiana State Museum. Come view the art that will be up for bids during our live two-hour event starting at 6PM on Sunday, October 24. Online bidding also begins on October 1.
