PROGRAMMING HIGHLIGHTS:

LPB

HAPPY 2012! We hope you had a safe, happy, and healthy start to the new year!

Tonight, on January 2, we give you 2 times the Roadshow! At 7, Antiques Roadshow visits Tulsa, and one of the highlights is a signed note from Mother Teresa. Then, the scene shifts to Tampa, where experts check out a marriage license issued to Davy Crockett for a wedding that never happened.

Tuesday night, relive Egypt's Golden Empire. At 7, find out how the concept of an empire was born. At 8, take a look at Egypt's golden age. At 9PM, Frontline takes a look at the opium trade in Afghanistan, the country that produces 90% of the world's illicit drug.

Natural disasters highlight Wednesday night's programming. At 8, NOVA travels with scientists attempting to discover the probability of volcanoes, when they might happen, and how deadly they could be. Then at 9, NOVA follows teams of scientists in Haiti and Chile after the deadly earthquakes in those countries.

Thursday night is when the Brits take over LPB. At 7, Antiques Roadshow UK will take a look at a pair of rare Irish plate buckets worth the price of a new car. At 8, Doc Martin is up for a prestigious surgeon's position in London. See the final part of Among the Few at 9 on Foyle's War, followed by Prime Suspect.

Friday night, we have a great news and public affairs lineup, with our own weekly newsmagazine, Louisiana: The State We're In, leading the way at 7. At 9, Great Performances presents Herbie Hancock, Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic as they celebrate the music of Gershwin.

Saturday night at 11, following the British comedies and the intrigue of MI-5, Austin City Limits presents indie rock with The Head & the Heart, plus eclectic modern rock from British veterans Gomez.

Sunday evening at 5, we will have an encore broadcast of LPB's Turning the Tide. At 6:30, see part four of Downton Abbey on Masterpiece. At 8, we proudly bring you part one of the seven-part Downton Abbey, Series II! At 10, get ready for the BCS with Ole War Skule -- Stories of LSU Football: The Clip Show.

ONLY A MONTH LEFT TO NOMINATE LOUISIANA YOUNG HEROES!

LPB Almost every day on the news, you'll hear about a young person in trouble -- often the students who do exceptionally well in the classroom or make a huge difference in their community do not receive the recognition they deserve. That’s why LPB and the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge created the Louisiana Young Heroes Awards. Now in its 17th year, the awards honor students in grades 7-12 who have excelled in the classroom, have served their community or have shown great courage in overcoming adversity in their own lives.

Nominations are now being taken for the 2011 Louisiana Young Heroes Awards. Students must be enrolled in a Louisiana school or home-schooled and cannot be older than 19 years of age.

Some of our previous Young Heroes have overcome physical handicaps or personal tragedies, helped others after hurricanes, cared for family members, started charitable foundations, and even saved lives. You can read profiles and see videos of previous years' Young Heroes on our website.

Nomination forms can be downloaded from the LPB website or submitted through the online form. Letters of recognition and other supporting materials should be sent to support the nomination. Students who have been nominated in past years may be re-nominated for this year’s awards. Previous winners are not eligible. The deadline for entries is Friday, February 3rd.

Louisiana Young Heroes Day will be April 18th. The Young Heroes will be treated to a day full of activities including lunch on the grounds of the Governor’s Mansion. The day will culminate in a banquet that night in Baton Rouge.

The awards are co-presented by the Baton Rouge Rotary Club and underwritten by ExxonMobil.
