Today at 2, we will have live coverage of Governor Bobby Jindal’s address to the Joint Session of the Legislature. Today also marks the premiere of daily legislative wrap up show Capitol Beat at 6:57 and 9:57PM and weekday mornings at 5:26AM. LPB, the House and Senate and Louisiana Cable Telecommunications Association are once again teaming up to provide for live coverage of the Legislature on LaTV weekdays from 2:00 to 6:00PM. Check your local cable system for the station in your area.

Also tonight, Antiques Roadshow is in Denver at 7 and American Experience travels back to World War II for Victory in the Pacific.
On Tuesday at 9, Frontline travels to Haiti to look at the devastation caused by January’s earthquake.

On Wednesday, Tavis Smiley Reports looks back at Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence and American Masters follows architect I.M. Pei’s efforts to design a museum in China at 8.

On Thursday at 8PM, Sherlock Holmes tries to solve the case of The Greek Interpreter while MI-5 tries to find and stop an airline passenger carrying a bomb.

On Sunday at 8PM, Colonel Richard Sharpe is back to his swashbuckling ways on Masterpiece. At 10, it’s the premiere of the BBC series Life On Mars where Detective Sam Tyler is knocked unconscious and wakes up in 1973.

LPB RAISES $312,000 DURING ITS MARCH MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN

LPB LPB received 2,044 pledges for $312,750 during its recently completed March membership campaign. This topped the goals set for the drive of $280,000 and 1750 pledges. The money raised during these campaigns is used to produce and purchase the programming which airs throughout the year on the six-channel LPB network.

Forever LSU, the LPB documentary about the history of Louisiana State University, was the top local program with almost $24,000 in pledges. Other local highlights included Against the Tide, the history of the Cajun people of Louisiana, and Eddie Robinson: A Life Celebrated.

“We want thank everyone who pledged their support for LPB during the drive and the corporate sponsors, restaurants and volunteers who donated their money, food and time to make the drive successful,” LPB President Beth Courtney said.

LPB’S A SUMMER OF BIRDS AND GREAT AMERICAN SEAFOOD COOK-OFF WIN TELLY AWARDS

LPB LPB productions of A Summer of Birds and The Great American Seafood Cook-Off have been honored with Telly Awards for their excellence in program production.

A Summer of Birds looks at the year naturalist painter John James Audubon spent in West Feliciana in 1921 at Oakley House and the major effect it had on his work. Christina Melton produced directed and co-wrote the documentary with C.E. Richard. Liz Barnes also served as a producer. Videographer Rex. Q. Fortenberry shot and edited the program and Mike Esneault created the music score. The documentary was based on the book, A Summer of Birds: John James Audubon at Oakley House by award-winning writer Danny Heitman. It was funded by a grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and the Foundation for Excellence in Louisiana Public Broadcasting.

The Great American Seafood Cook-Off featured highlights from the July 15th chef competition in New Orleans. The show was co-hosted by Sig Hansen of The Deadliest Catch and Chef John Folse, who has co-produced and hosted 12 series of A Taste of Louisiana with LPB.

The program was produced and directed by Gary Allen. Liz Barnes also served as a producer.

Sponsors for the event included the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service, Michelob Brewing Company, Whole Foods Market, Loubat Food Service Equipment Company, the Louisiana Restaurant Association and the Royal Sonesta Hotel in New Orleans.

LPB Mark your calendar for May 6. That’s when Friends of LPB will honor this year’s Louisiana Legends. The 2010 honorees are Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist James Burton, former State Education Superintendent and businessman Louis Michot, arts activist Marjorie Morrison, NBA legend and Basketball Hall of Famer Willis Reed, and former Governor and Congressman Buddy Roemer.

FREE L.E.A.P. HELP AVAILABLE

There are two ways for parents and students to get free help in studying for the State L.E.A.P. Tests. You can visit the LPB website at and see the Making the Grade created by LPB and the State Department of Education. The lessons cover Fourth Grade Language Arts and Mathematics and Eighth Grade Language Arts and Mathematics.

If you live in the Baton Rouge or Lafayette areas and have digital cable, you can view the videos in the On Demand section of Cox Digital Cable. To access these programs, click on the On Demand button on your remote. When the menu comes up, click on “Freezone” and the menu for free programming will come up. Click on “LEAP” and then choose the section you want to review. You must have the Digital Tier of Cox Cable to access the On Demand programs.

FRIENDS VOLUNTEER TO RECEIVE WOMAN OF EXCELLENCE AWARD

The Louisiana Legislative Women's Caucus Foundation has selected Frances Bennett of Baton Rouge as one of the five recipients of the 2010 Women of Excellence Awards. Frances is a longtime volunteer for Friends of LPB and other Baton Rouge non-profit organizations and is richly deserving of this honor.

PBS KIDS GO WRITER’S CONTEST DEADLINE IS APRIL 5TH

LPB If your child would like to take part in the contest for children in kindergarten through the third grade, the deadline is Monday, April 5. To enter, children must create their own stories and drawings. Visit the website for the rules and the entry form.

EARTH DAY SCREENING

LPB LPB will host a special free screening of the American Experience documentary Earth Days at the Old State Capitol on Sunday, April 18 at 1PM as part of the Louisiana Earth Day Celebration in Downtown Baton Rouge.
