LPB AND THREE LOUISIANA PUBLIC RADIO STATIONS TAKE PART IN TWO NEW JOURNALISM INITIATIVES

LPB, KEDM-FM in Monroe, WWNO-FM in New Orleans and KRVS-FM in Lafayette are taking part in two new journalism initiatives funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

LPB and KEDM are participating in a new Local Journalism Center for the Southern Region headed by Georgia Public Broadcasting to increase local reporting about education in the South, while LPB, WWNO and KRVS are part of part of a Gulf South Consortium to continue coverage about the long-term environmental, economic and social effects of the Deep Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Southern Regional Education Desk participants include Alabama Public Television, WBHM-FM, Mississippi Public Broadcasting, WNPT-TV in Nashville, Tennessee, and WUOT-FM. The LJC will create multimedia, multiplatform content on and raise awareness of the unique, long-standing education challenges facing the South. In addition to reporting and producing broadcast content, the partner stations will create an interactive website and web modules that will distribute and curate content, and undertake community engagement activities through events, partnerships and social media..

LPB, WWNO and KRVS are part of a $538,000 CPB grant that will be administered by LPB to expand reporting on the aftermath of the Gulf Coast Oil Spill. Public media stations in the region have responded to the crisis with in-depth reporting for their own communities and for national audiences via NPR and PBS programs. The grant will help LPB create a Gulf Coast Consortium (GCC) to support stations’ local journalism efforts to cover the crisis and to facilitate sharing of content among stations for the next year.

The GCC will create and share content for broadcast and digital distribution and will also conduct community engagement activities such as town hall meetings. LPB will administer the grant, coordinate content and make sub-grants to other producing stations. Besides the Louisiana stations, other participants include Alabama Public Television; Mississippi Public Broadcasting; WEDU-TV/FM, Tampa, FL; WUSF-TV/FM, Tampa, FL; WBHM-FM, Birmingham, AL; WSRE-TV/FM, Pensacola, FL; WVAS-FM, Montgomery, AL.

THE GREAT SHERLOCK DEBATE

LPB Do you love the classic Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett versions of Sherlock Holmes or the new Masterpiece Mystery! version set in modern times with Dr. Watson chronicling Holmes’s exploits on a blog? Come join the discussion on Thursday, November 4 at 6:30PM at the Citiplace Barnes & Noble in Baton Rouge. LSU Graduate Student Kris Mecholsky will be the guest speaker and will moderate the discussion. There will be free scones and coffee.

To get ready for the discussion, watch the new Sherlock mysteries on October 24 and 31 at 8PM on LPB and the Jeremy Brett versions on Thursdays at 8PM or Saturdays at 6PM. Did you know that over 70 actors have portrayed Holmes and more than 10,000 books have been written using the character? If Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had been more successful as a physician, Sherlock Holmes may never have existed. A lack of patients gave Doyle the time to write the original Sherlock Holmes stories.
