LPB We hear too much about young people who get in trouble -- the students who do exceptionally well in the classroom or make a huge difference in their community do not receive the recognition they deserve. That’s why LPB and the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge created the Louisiana Young Heroes Awards. Now in its 18th year, the awards honor students in grades 7-12 who have excelled in the classroom, have served their community or have shown great courage in overcoming adversity in their own lives. In other words, these young people are an inspiration to those around them.

Nominations are now being taken for the 2013 Louisiana Young Heroes Awards. Students must be enrolled in a Louisiana school or home-schooled and cannot be older than 19 years of age.

Some of our previous Young Heroes have overcome physical handicaps or personal tragedies, helped others after hurricanes, cared for family members, started charitable foundations, and even saved lives. You can read profiles and see videos of previous years' Young Heroes on our website.

Nomination forms can be downloaded from the LPB website or submitted through the online form. Letters of recognition and other supporting materials should be sent to support the nomination. Students who have been nominated in past years may be re-nominated for this year’s awards. Previous winners are not eligible. The deadline for entries is Friday, February 8, 2013. Winners will be announced on LPB on Friday, March 1, 2013.

Louisiana Young Heroes Day will be April 17, 2013. The Young Heroes will be treated to a day full of activities including lunch on the grounds of the Governor’s Mansion. The day will culminate in a banquet that night in Baton Rouge.

The awards are co-presented by the Baton Rouge Rotary Club and underwritten by ExxonMobil and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana.

LPB Starting today through April 6, 2013, children in the LPB viewing areas can submit their entries to the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest. LPB will select local winners and award prizes including in the spring of 2013. The local winners will be featured on LPB’s website.

The local winners will then be entered into the national contest where a panel of esteemed judges will rank the top 12 entries. National winners will be announced during the summer of 2013 and the winning stories will be featured on pbskids.org/writerscontest.

The national winners will receive prizes, including tablets, e-readers and MP3 players. Additionally, Highlights for Children has joined the Contest as a new promotional partner and all participants will have the option to receive a print or digital version of Highlights magazine.
