Youths in Iowa have challenged Louisiana’s teens to take steps to improve their health. The Governor’s Council on Physical fitness and the Legislative Youth Advisory Council held a pep rally this week to kick off what’s being labeled “The 100 day challenge.”

Step by Step: Kids Trimming Down is a six part series of reports designed to help children live healthier lives. About 25 percent of our American children (about 9 million) are overweight. 15-percent are severely overweight or obese. The obesity epidemic is placing children at a much higher risk for type II diabetes, heart disease, joint and breathing problems, as well as certain cancers.

The original 60-minute documentary features some of the state’s top health professionals explaining the dangers of obesity in children. Those problems include an increased risk of heart disease, Type II Diabetes, asthma and depression.
