Program Description

imageIn the late summer of 2005, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita churned ashore wreaking havoc upon the already endangered coastline of Louisiana. Washing Away: After the Storms chronicles Louisiana’s recovery through the personal accounts of six very different survivors whose homes, livelihoods and communities were shattered in their wake.

Witness the devastation through their eyes as they face the daunting task of rebuilding, more devastating hurricanes and an unfolding environmental catastrophe that could forever change their land and way of life.

Learn what’s at stake for the state and the nation as Louisiana’s coastline gives way to the Gulf.

Two time Emmy-Award winner, Academy-Award nominee and New Orleans native Patricia Clarkson narrates the program, which also features the music of Emmy-Award winning composer Mike Esneault.

Program participants:

Kerry St. Pé, a marine biologist and the Director of the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program, a 4.2 million acre area currently experiencing the world’s fastest rate of land loss.

Leah Chase, chef and co-owner of the famous Dooky Chase Restaurant in New Orleans historic Tremé neighborhood.

Errol Domingue, a third-generation sugar cane, rice, cattle and crawfish farmer from Erath.

Marlon Horton, a New Orleans East musician who videotaped his harrowing experiences during and following Katrina including the flooding of his home, his helicopter rescue and evacuation to the Astrodome in Houston.

Ted Falgout, Liaison for Ports and Parish Governments at BP’s Primary Incident Command Center in Houma and former Director of Port Fourchon, the nation’s largest oil and gas hub.

Preston Doré, a shrimper from Delcambre whose seafood restaurant, bar and distribution business were destroyed by Rita, now faces an even greater challenge as the oil spill threatens to take away his lifeline.

imageIn 2006, Louisiana Public Broadcasting produced the award-winning documentary Washing Away: Losing Louisiana, revealing the causes and consequences of coastal land loss as experienced by those living through it. Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon narrated the program, which featured music by Cajun performer Zachary Richard, New Orleans jazz singer Leah Chase (daughter of Chef Leah Chase) and the talented Cajun band L’Angelus.

Washing Away: After the Storms picks up the story of these six survivors as they struggle to rebuild their lives amidst new challenges and recurring threats.
