Errol Domingue is a third-generation sugar cane, rice, cattle and crawfish farmer in Erath. His small community is located more than 100 miles east of Rita’s landfall and 20 miles inland, yet was flooded by a six foot saltwater storm surge.
Most members of his extended family lost their homes, and were forced to move into cramped quarters with family members who were spared.
Three years later, Hurricane Ike devastated their community yet again.
Inspired to run for public office, he now leads the charge to protect his family and help preserve his community’s way of life.
Still working to regain financial stability after the storms, the family endeavors to keep their farm in operation for the next generation.
