Five historic & unique Louisiana churches are featured in this NEW “Lost Louisiana” premiering on the six-channel LPB network.
The featured churches include Grace Episcopal Church in St. Francisville, Madonna Chapel in Bayou Goula, St, Joseph’s Co-Cathedral in Thibodaux, Summer Grove Baptist Church in Shreveport and Touro Synagogue in New Orleans.
Built in 1827, Grace Episcopal has a long and storied history. One of its most notable events was its part in “The Day the War Stopped” in which a cease fire was called in 1863 so that the Confederate and Union Masons could bury the captain of the USS Albatross. The event is recreated each June on the Grace Church grounds.
Madonna Chapel in the Iberville Parish town of is listed in Ripley’s Believe it Or Not as the smallest church in the world.
Built in the 1920s, St. Joseph's Co-Cathedral. In Thibodaux is one of Louisiana's most expensive rural churches.
Established in 1849, the Summer Grove Baptist Church is now located in the former South Park Mall in Shreveport. It was purchased three years ago by the church and the former J.C. Penney’s store was renovated to house the church.
Formed in 1828 after two Jewish congregations merged in New Orleans, Touro Synagogue moved to its current location on St. Charles Avenue in 1909. Fortunately, it did not receive major damage from Hurricane Katrina but did have some flooding and damage to the roof and a stained glass window. One of its most interesting events every year is Jazz Fest Shabbat which coincides with the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and has featured music by some of New Orleans' most renowned musical talents and Klezmer bands.
