Charlie Whinham arrived at LPB in the fall of 2002 and currently serves as Managing Editor, co-host and producer of Louisiana: The State We’re In. In addition to his work on LPB’s weekly newsmagazine, Whinham has also produced several programs for LPB including Lost Louisiana: What’s in a Name?, Louisiana World War Two Stories, and Louisiana’s Natural Treasures: Our State Parks.
“I was drawn to journalism and broadcasting because I love to hear and tell a good story,” says Whinham. “Louisiana is a storyteller’s paradise.”
The University of Kentucky graduate began his broadcasting career in 1987 as a radio news director in Campbellsville, KY and later moved to nearby Bowling Green as a news reporter for WBKO-TV. Whinham would land in the field of sportscasting and served as sports director for WPBN-TV in Traverse City, MI and sports reporter/anchor for WBAY-TV in Green Bay, WI. During his time in Green Bay, Whinham filed a number of stories for ESPN.
Prior to joining LPB, the Michigan native left broadcasting for a career in public relations. He served as public relations director for several arena football teams including the Tampa Bay Storm, Baton Rouge Blaze and Lafayette Roughnecks.
In the fall of 2008, Whinham traveled to the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. to accept the Distinguished Reporting Award from the Military Reporters and Editors Association for Louisiana World War Two Stories.
